My Very First Dudou

Irene Lu

Hello Ladies and Lovers,

This is the first time I’m sharing this sample as I’m learning to accept flaws and mistakes as a learning tool and not something to be ashamed of. New year, new me! Amirite? So below, I share with you the first dudou I ever made and interestingly enough, lace was involved.

This was made by request from a friend who wanted to gift custom lingerie for his wife’s birthday. It was during a time when Pillowbook was lost in the middle of a “soft launch” so there was no styles to choose from and thus, only trusting (crazy) friends will order from your not-so-clear business. Thank goodness for friends! There were also no specifics to the order, only that it was black and so I thought “heyyy… let’s make a dudou for her!”

After few hours into the night, this is what happened:

As you can see from the detail shots, how messy the stitches are, the corners of the appliqué ribbons are horrendous. It’s not even lined so all the messy stitches are exposed. The color combo didn’t settle well on my eyes and I can continue on till 2030. What TH was I thinking!?

So what did I do? I called up my friend with my tail between my legs and apologized that I just couldn’t sell this to him. He said it looked fine to him but I cringed. It was atrocious! I shoved it in a box and that was the end of it.

I wish I knew back then how the mind loves to tell lies because looking back, this “failure" opened a beautiful path to the Shhh… collection and it’s my best selling collection to date. I’m happy to say that today, as I’m typing this, this piece is proudly displayed in my home studio as a daily reminder to welcome mistakes with open arms. I hope you can learn from my mistakes too- Be kind to yourself. Everything you do, wether if it fails or succeeds, is another happy leaf in the tree and in some cases, as mine, it was a seed !

This brings us back to my IG post this morning about a poll result “To lace or not to lace?” and actually, I’m getting pretty excited about using more lace in Pillowbook and I hope you are too.

PS. Yes, I do have more of this lace! ;)

Love, Pillowbook.
